Day 4 - Angel Island, CA to Lagunitas, CA

Day Total - 29.3 miles
Trip Total - 169.7 miles

We got up fairly late in the morning, since we couldn't get off the island until 10:30 anyway. After enjoying the view onevlast time over breakfast, we rode back to the ferry dock. On the boat with us were a group of middle schoolers in what appeared to be Civil War garb returning from a camping trip.

We disembarked in Tiburon around 11 (it took awhile until we could get on the ferry because there were so many passengers getting off from San Francisco) and immediately made for the In-N-Out Burger we had passed the previous day. With only minor navigational difficulties, we found it and scarfed down some delicious calories. That's one nice thing about cycle touring - we could eat fast food all the time and still be in good shape.

From the In-N-Out in Mill Valley, we had to climb the Camino Alto over to Corte Madera. I don't think I've ever seen so many cyclists on a stretch of road, especially not on a Friday afternoon. We chatted with a retired man on his bike at the top, and on the bumpy, windy descent, Kevin dropped a pannier again.

From Corte Madera, we got on a bike path to avoid a busy road through Larkspur and Kentfield before ending up at the town park in Ross. From there through San Anselmo and into Fairfax, we were mostly on side roads with little motorized traffic. There were cyclists everywhere though!

Fairfax was the last town before the climb back over the Coast Range on Sir Francis Drake Blvd. The heat notwithstanding, the climb turned out to be fairly easy, and once over the summit, we had a long downhill stretch through the cattle country if the San Geronimo Valley. The headwind picked up too, but it was nowhere near as bad as it had been two days earlier.

We made for Samuel P. Taylor State Park, but not without a final stop in the town of Lagunitas for groceries. Our large initial food stock was starting to run low, so we picked up some essentials (and beer). When we pulled into the forested park a few miles down the road, we were, as usual, the only bikers there. We had our pick of spots among the redwoods, and we settled in for a busy weekend night of screaming kids and loud cars and RVs in a full campground.
